Electric Shaver Tips - Quick and Easy Guide

Electric shavers are quick and easy. Usually used for a dry shave, (although waterproof wet models are available for use in the shower), electric shavers are less messy, easier to use, and offer less chance of cuts and scrapes.

Finding The Right Shaver. There are two main types of electric shavers: the rotary blade and the foil blade.

-Rotary shavers use 1-3 circulating blades under a slotted head, which rotate in a circular motion when cutting.

-Foil blade shavers use a back and forth motion to cut the hair through a screen. Foil shavers may contain 1-4 rows of blades. Single foil shavers are great for the new shaver, a user with slow beard growth.

-Double foil shavers offer two cutters, covered by two screens; and triple foil shavers have three cutters over three screens. Either work well for most users. Which is chosen really depends on the user's individual preference.

Learn How To Shave. For the cleanest and easiest shave, users need to learn how to use their electric shaver properly.

-Preparing The Face. Unless you are using a wet-shave electric razor, the face must be completely dry before use. The hairs must be dry and stiff in order for the shaver to get a hold of them for a good cut. Never wash the face before starting. Use an alcohol-based pre-shave lotion to help dry excess oils and moisture on the face and chin. This will allow the whiskers to stand straight up, and allow the shaver a closer cut.

-Using Slow, Intentional Movements. Most men prefer electric shaving because there's no worry as to which direction to shave. With or against the grain of the hair is fine, just move the shaver slowly, using gentle pressure. Rotary users may also use small circular motions. If you find yourself pushing harder, it may be time to clean or replace your blades.

-Watch Out For Heat-Related Irritation. Users with sensitive skin should shave more sensitive areas first. Electric shavers have the tendency to generate a small amount of heat during the course of the shave, which may irritate sensitive skin.

-Finish With A Splash. Finish the shave with a splash of warm, then cool water. Pat dry. Apply non-alcohol-based aftershave or lotion on the face to help moisturize and soothe skin.

Taking Care Of Your Razor. Electric razors are easy and fast to use, but, like any appliance, they do need some maintenance in order to keep them working properly. Take the time to read the manual thoroughly before use and remember these simple tips:

-Clean the blades and/or screen regularly. Most shavers need to have their cutters and screens brushed out after every second or third shave. Use the small brush that comes with the shaver, and never brush the screen. Open the shaver in accordance to the manufacturer's instructions and brush and blow the internal cutters. Some models offer a separate cleaning solution that may be used.

-Keep the screen and cutter lubricated. Most electric shavers can be lubricated using a spray lubricant offered by the manufacturer. Lubricate while running for best results.

-Change the blades when needed. Foils and cutters generally need to be changed once a year. More often if the user fails to clean and lubricate them properly. Change the foil and cutter at he same time for best results and to avoid injury.
